As the second wine of Dominus Estate, Napanook comes from parcels directly behind the Dominus winery, and the 2023 is assembled from 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. It ages 20 months in French oak, only 20% of it new, which keeps the focus on fruit and texture. Deep purple in the glass, it offers blackberry and cassis lifted by rose petal, violet and sagebrush, with tobacco leaf and graphite underneath. The palate is medium-bodied and graceful, the tannins finely ground, and the finish runs long on earth and wet stone. In its youth it rewards a few hours in a decanter; critics see it drinking from now well into the 2040s. Serve with herb-crusted rack of lamb, duck breast with cherries or a porcini risotto.

96 Points, Jonathan Cristaldi, Decanter: "The 2023 Napanook is sourced from parcels directly behind the Dominus Estate winery and, in this vintage, is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. Utterly suave and polished, this is perhaps one of the most open-knit and accessible expressions of Napanook I have tasted to date. The wine is absolutely riveting on the palate. I tasted it after it had been decanted and open for around three hours, and at this youthful stage, it clearly benefits from that time. If you open this sometime after 2028, that patience will be unnecessary. Pure blackberry and blackcurrant fruit resonate on the mid-palate, lifted by a perfumed rose petal, violet, and sagebrush notes. Refined layers of darker berry fruit follow, framed by ultra-fine, powdery tannins. The long, earth-driven finish is fuelled by wet stone and graphite. (Drink between 2026-2046)" 03/26

97 Points, James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com: "Aromas of blueberries, ash and stones with hints of blackberries, orange peel and chocolate. It’s medium-bodied with medium-round tannins that are polished and velvety but always in check. Cedar and baking spices like nutmeg on the palate. Lovely soft and silky texture with a long finish. Enchanting and delicious. 92% cabernet sauvginon, 4% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot. From organically grown grapes. Drink now or hold." 03/26

93 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous: "The 2023 Napanook is deep, bold and luscious right out of the gate. Black cherry, lavender, dried herbs and graphite fill out its mid-weight frame quite nicely. I expect the 2023 will drink well with minimal cellaring, as it is already quite open and doesn't quite have the tannic palate presence of more important years." 11/25
