Our History
1935-1950
A Leap Toward the American Dream
Zachys begins with courage. In the mid-1930s, a young Polish-born man named Zacharia fled conscription into the Russian army and the growing devastation of war in Europe. He boarded a ship in Amsterdam bound for New York. Upon arrival, an immigration officer shortened his name on the entry papers.
1950s-1980s
A Son Finds His Calling, The Birth of Zachys
Zachy’s son Don joined the business. Don purchased his father’s store and renamed it in his honor. What began as East Parkway Liquor House became Zachy’s—and soon after, by a sign maker’s happy accident, simply Zachys. Don set out to build the nation’s premier fine wine and spirits retailer, traveling the world to source exceptional bottles while preserving the warmth of a neighborhood shop. Zachys was redefining access to fine wine.
Late 1980s–1990s
A New Generation Joins Zachys
Don’s passion proved genetic. His son Jeff, along with Don’s son-in-law Andrew, joined the business, learning alongside Don while helping modernize Zachys for a new era. Together, they brought Zachys into the digital age, launching one of the industry’s first comprehensive e-commerce websites and opening access to clients far beyond Westchester.
Mid-1990s–2010s
Entering the Auction World
Zachys expanded beyond retail and into auctions, pioneering a new, hospitality-driven model: the dine-around auction. These events combined world-class collections with celebration and connection, reflecting Zachys’ belief that wine is meant to be shared. The auctions quickly earned a reputation for both their caliber and their character, becoming as memorable as they were successful. Zachys expanded its global reach, hosting auctions across the United States, Europe, and Asia.
2010s–Today
A New Chapter of Growth
As the wine world continued to evolve, so did Zachys. The company expanded its services to include professional wine storage, offering trusted stewardship for clients’ most valued collections. A newly renovated, state-of-the-art Port Chester facility brought retail, e-commerce, auctions, and storage together under one roof, creating a single hub designed to better serve a global clientele.
