Reliquus draws on Grace Family's two small estate vineyards in the St. Helena AVA, organically farmed and blended into a Cabernet Sauvignon made for earlier enjoyment. The 2022 spends 21 months in barrel, 65% of it new French oak, yet the fruit stays out front. Red and black cherry, black raspberry and plum lead the aromatics, with spearmint, bay leaf, cedar and a darker undertow of espresso and cola behind them. On the palate it is medium to full in weight and supple, with lively acidity keeping the fruit fresh and tannins that gather gradually toward the finish rather than gripping early. It is generous and open now, and critics place its best drinking through the early 2030s. Open it with smash burgers, barbecued tri-tip or a wild-mushroom pizza.
