Vincent Paris, who founded his Northern Rhône domaine in 1997, recently bought the 4-hectare La Geynale vineyard from his uncle, Robert Michel. The vines were planted in 1910 on southeast-facing granite and are pruned hard, to just four bunches per vine, to keep yields low. The 100% Syrah is fermented with 90% whole clusters at low temperature, two-thirds in barrel and one-third in tank, then aged in oak barrels for up to 12 months. The result is a powerful, tightly built Cornas: cracked black pepper and wet stone over ripe blackberry, dried violet and an earthy undertone, with real energy pushing through to the finish. Cassoulet, grilled merguez or a peppercorn-crusted steak are its natural partners.

93-95 Points, Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous: "The 2024 Cornas La Geynale hails from the glass with intense peppercorn, crushed rocks, fleshy tones and precisely ripe blackberry. Dried violets and earthy tones add more aromatic layers. Built like a skyscraper, the 2024 is a serious La Geynale in the making, lifting the finish with stupendous vitality. I can't wait to taste it once it's bottled." 01/26
