Critic Reviews
Wine Spectator
93 Points
93 Points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator: "Cherry and strawberry flavors are enhanced by notes of mint, earth, spice and iron in this powerful red, which builds in intensity to the long, oak-tinged finish. All the components are there, just needs time. Best from 2027 through 2042. 750 cases made, 225 cases imported." 10/24
Antonio Galloni
95 Points
95 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous: "The 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Coltassala is one of the finest wines I have tasted from Volpaia. This ample, resonant Gran Selezione offers notable fruit intensity and exceptional balance. Soft contours and a kiss of French oak lend a contemporary touch. All the elements are so nicely balanced (Drink between 2025-2036)" 07/24
Decanter
93 Points
93 Points, Michaela Morris, Decanter: "Produced since 1980 – first as a Vino da Tavola, then a Riserva, and now a Gran Selezione – Coltassala hails from a single vineyard. Despite ongoing replanting, it remains true to its original mix of Sangiovese and Mammolo. The just-bottled 2021 is its usual intense self, with wood-driven notes currently at the fore. Charry oak, vanilla, tobacco and mint surge from the glass, and the palate is equally boisterous. Chocolatey textures collide with resolute, vertical tannins, and dark, concentrated fruit lurks underneath. A particularly virile, powerful rendition that demands time to tame and hopefully show Radda’s brighter side." 02/24
Wine Advocate
94+ Points
94+ Points, Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The organic Volpaia 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Radda Coltassala is layered and fun aromatically with bright cherry fruit and powdery aromas that recall crushed stone or chalk. Indeed, the mineral identity in this wine is nicely defined. This blend of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Mammolo is quite generous in terms of bouquet but a little less so in terms of texture. There is nice freshness, and this Gran Selezione from Radda has a medium-long finish. There's even a hint of white peppercorn on the close. This is a 10,000-bottle release." 07/24
