The 2022 season opened dry and warm, with budbreak on March 25; Vajra's vines escaped severe spring hailstorms, warmth held from early June through summer, and a cooler September brought low yields of vibrant fruit. The estate's Ravera parcels lie in the cru's southern amphitheater in Novello, at 300 to 380 meters on Tortonian marls shot through with Serravallian sandstone and clay; the winery has farmed organically since Aldo Vajra adopted it in 1971. This 100% Nebbiolo was picked October 4, sorted three times and macerated 47 days under a submerged cap, then aged 22 months in 25- and 50-hectoliter Slavonian casks. Dark cherry, star anise, marzipan and a purple-flower perfume meet cedar, tobacco leaf and an iron-tinged, wet-clay depth. The tannins are broad yet fine, the fruit juicy, and a saline note keeps the long finish alive. Osso buco, porcini risotto or roast pheasant are where it belongs.

Critic Reviews

Wine Enthusiast
96 Points
96 Points, Jeff Porter, Wine Enthusiast: "Herbal and spiced wood opening alongside green top strawberry and sour cherry, a combination that feels less composed and more like the vineyard simply speaking its mind. Plush and soft on the palate with a roundness that carries that herbal thread all the way through, the character of Ravera unmistakable from first sip to last. This is what working with a vintage rather than against it looks and tastes like, estate and site in complete and unhurried agreement. Drink Now - 2045." 09/26
Wine Advocate
95 Points
95 Points, Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The G.D. Vajra 2022 Barolo Ravera, from fruit grown in the village of Novello, shows impressive depth and concentration with layers of soft fruit that build toward an intense, fruit-forward bouquet. Dark cherry, cassis, violet, white pepper and a delicate mineral note rise from the glass. Ravera is one of Barolo’s most important sites, where elevated vineyards and calcareous soils help preserve freshness, even as the area has faced increasingly warm growing seasons. The wine captures the resilience of Novello fruit, holding its shape and energy, even in a hot vintage." 07/26

96+ Points, Audrey Frick, JebDunnuck.com: "The 2022 Barolo Ravera pours a bright medium red color and was bottled the same day as the Coste di Rose. The nose shows more depth and takes time to open, revealing notes of fresh cherries, graphite, and iron. On the palate, it has broader shoulders and firmer tannins, with greater mineral depth and richness. Drink 2026-2046." 04/26

95 Points, Jacobo Garcia Andrade, JamesSuckling.com: "Tea, hibiscus, orange rind, sandalwood and dried flowers. Really aromatic and absorbing. Medium-bodied, with a transparent, ethereal sense of fruit and a backbone of tannins that gives definition all the way to the end. Unique balance, from the famed vineyard in Novello. Better from 2029." 01/26

93 Points, Kerin O'Keefe, KerinOKeefe.com: "The G.D. Vajra 2022 Ravera this is another impressive effort for the family's 2022 Barolos. It opens with aromas recalling grilled herb, new leather, camphor and forest floor that on the full-bodied palate transform into dried cherry, raspberry tart, bitter orange and licorice. Notes of dried sage and thyme linger on the finish alongside firm, close-grained tannins that jump in and leave a good grip. Drink 2028–2034." 04/26
