Castellero is a south-facing parcel of just 0.69 hectares in the commune of Barolo, planted in 1970 to the Lampia strain of Nebbiolo at about 300 meters. Its sandy loam lies over Diano sandstone, sandier than the Brezza family’s Cannubi holdings, and it yields a firmly structured Barolo that can seem out of balance in its youth. The family bottles Castellero on its own only in years they judge good enough; in weaker years the fruit joins their Cannubi and Sarmassa grapes in a Barolo without a vineyard name. In the cellar they work with a light hand, guiding the wine rather than shaping it. This is a Barolo to lay down rather than open young; serve it at 16 to 18°C in a large glass. Braised beef, roast venison or a mature Castelmagno are what it wants at the table.

Wine Advocate
94 Points
94 Points, Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The organic Brezza 2021 Barolo Castellero reveals an open-knit character that is subtle and elegant. This pretty wine embraces a classical or traditional side of Nebbiolo, keeping with the house style all the while. The tannins are fine and powdery. There is a pretty hint of sweet violet pastille or rose perfume on the close. This release of 4,945 bottles starts off in stainless steel for 10 months of fermentation and matures in Slavonian oak for 24 months." 06/25

95 Points, Kerin O'Keefe, KerinOKeefe.com: "From the MGA of the same name located in the village of Barolo at an altitude of 300m above sea level in a site with predominately sandy soils, the Brezza 2021 Castellero has beautiful aromas of wild rose, camphor, cedar and dark culinary spice. Elegantly structured and still primary, the vibrant palate delivers red cherry, licorice, white pepper and black tea set against a tannic backbone and firm acidity. Give this time to develop to its full potential. Drink 2031–2041." 01/25

93 Points, Antonio Galloni, Antonio Galloni: "The 2021 Barolo Castellero is redolent of black cherry, lavender, dried herbs, leather, tobacco and incense. Earthy undertones add to a real sense of gravitas. Dark and deeply textured in the glass, the 2021 impresses with its balance and alluring personality. Polished tannins wrap it all together on the close. This is such a distinctive Barolo." 01/25
