The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Massimo is dark, rich and powerful, with enough density to nearly support the heavy oak, closing on notes of sweet blackberry fruit. Large Garbellotto casks and neutral tonneaux were used for élevage, though the result feels somewhat clumsy at this stage. Looking ahead, the estate’s new winery will be equipped with Pauscha and Mittelberger vessels, along with botti from the lesser-known cooperage Dargaud & Jaeglé, and will feature glass-lined cement fermenters, a shift that should bring greater precision to future releases." 01/26
