Between 20 and 30 separate plots go into Castelgiocondo’s Brunello, and the 2021 ran to some 350,000 bottles. The estate, southwest of Montalcino and anchored by a fortress dating to 1100, belongs to Marchesi Frescobaldi. Its 100% Sangiovese comes from southwest-facing vineyards at 300 to 400 meters on galestro, clay and Pliocene sand. A mild, wet winter and an April frost slowed the start of 2021; a hot, dry summer with big gaps between day and night temperatures kept acidity bright, and harvest came in the first week of October. After double sorting and steel fermentation, the wine aged in used barriques and large casks. Cherry, raspberry and plum carry allspice, pepper, incense and candied rose, with blood orange on the palate. Silky and juicy, with real tannic grip and a slightly citric finish, it is made for keeping. Wild boar ragù, bistecca or aged pecorino will reward the wait.

Critic Reviews
James Suckling
95 Points
95 Points, James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com: "Very attractive aromas of red cherries, mushrooms and flowers follow through to a medium body with firm and integrated tannins and a vivid, subtle, fruity finish. A lovely young Brunello that you can enjoy now or age for many years to come. Drink or hold." 12/25
Wine Spectator
94 Points
94 Points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator: "Black cherry and black currant flavors are the main themes in this intense red, with iron and wild herbs adding complexity. Balanced and vibrant, with resonant tannins guarding the long aftertaste. This feels more modern in style, with an emphasis on bright fruit. Best from 2030 through 2047. 25,000 cases made, 3,000 cases imported." 03/26

94 Points
94 Points, Eric Guido, Vinous: "The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Castelgiocondo bursts from the glass with a vivid blend of crushed raspberries and cherries, a whiff of allspice and candied rose. It is elegant in feel, silken and smooth with tantalizing acidity and a dominating core of ripe red fruits that adds impact. The finish is grippy and long, potent with fine-grained tannins and a slight citrus tinge that pinches at the cheeks. This classy Brunello is built for the cellar. (Drink between 2028-2042)" 11/25
