Carema Sole e Roccia Monte Maletto 2022 (750ML)

Gian Marco Viano worked as a sommelier in Glasgow and London before returning to Carema, a 16-hectare appellation an hour north of Turin, to help bring its abandoned terraces back to life. Monte Maletto, founded in 2015 and farmed along organic lines, works vines up to 75 years old at 350 to 500 meters. The soils are about 70% sand, with glacial stones of serpentine and gneiss. Sole e Roccia is 100% Nebbiolo, 70% destemmed and fermented spontaneously with 35 to 40 days on the skins. It ages at least 18 months in second- and third-passage barriques and is bottled unfiltered. Expect dark berries and violets over a distinctly stony note, with a silky, light-bodied frame and fine, well-knit tannins. At the table, look to agnolotti, braised rabbit or fonduta.
