Hail swept through in mid-August 2022 and cost Fontodi more than a fifth of its crop, coming at the end of a hot, dry summer in Panzano. The team responded by picking early and extracting gently, and this Chianti Classico shows the approach: concentrated and dark-fruited, but lighter in frame than this bottling usually is. Black cherry and blackcurrant lead, with mocha, licorice, clove, dried herbs and a dusty, gravelly edge, plus a slightly untamed streak that keeps it lively. The tannins have some chew, yet it is fresh, mouthwatering fruit that carries the finish. Critics differ on pace, some opening it now and others giving it another year, and most see it drinking well into the early-to-mid 2030s. In magnum it suits a long table: porchetta, a pot of ribollita, or a board of salumi and aged pecorino.

Wine Advocate
93 Points
93 Points, Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The organic Fontodi 2022 Chianti Classico shows a dark color and a deep, velvety appearance. The bouquet opens to earthy aromas with baked plum, cherry and pressed blue flower. This is quite a rich edition. It's a little different than past releases, but it's also accessible and opulent. This 100% Sangiovese is fermented in steel and ages in both barrique and botte for 24 months. Production is an ample 170,000 bottles." 10/25
Decanter

93 Points, Michaela Morris, Decanter: "With 20 of its 110 hectares in the western sector of Panzano, Fontodi ended up losing over 20% of its total volume of grapes in the violent mid-August hailstorm. Despite reduced quantities, quality certainly wasn’t compromised. The hot, arid summer has yielded a particularly dense and still somewhat austere wine. Coffee, blackcurrant and dusty stone surface furtively on the nose. Powerful and hearty with just enough of a wild edge, this is saturated with dark fruit and gravelly minerals. The tannins are properly chewy. but it is that intrinsic juiciness that stands out and has me craving a grilled steak. (Drink between 2026-2032)" 02/25

91 Points, Kerin O'Keefe, KerinOKeefe.com: "The Fontodi 2022 Chianti Classico has aromas of ripe, dark-skinned berry, leather, forest floor, eucalyptus, cocoa and an earthy whiff of game. Made with organically farmed fruit and from what was an infamously hot, dry vintage, it’s full-bodied and enveloping, offering red currant, tart cherry, mint and orange peel offset by a backbone of close-grained, drying tannins. Give the tannins some time to unclench then drink to capture the fruit richness. Drink after 2030. Abv: 14.5% Kerin O’Keefe October 2025" 10/25
