Cornelius Grove is a five-acre, organically farmed hillside in the Mayacamas foothills behind St. Helena, part of Heath Canyon Ranch, where olive trees grow among the vines on cobbles and red Perkins soil. Grace Family Vineyards, founded in St. Helena in 1976 by Dick and Ann Grace, now belongs to Kathryn Green, and Helen Keplinger makes the wine. Summer heat and drought marked 2022, but the raised, exposed blocks brought the 100% Cabernet Sauvignon to full ripeness with its acidity intact. It aged 21 months in French oak, 65% new. Ripe dark cherry, black currant and fig paste come with cedar, pipe tobacco, menthol and licorice over a dusty, mineral note, and a floral lift at the end. The tannins are soft in this vintage, the palate juicy and deep. Grilled rib-eye, beef Wellington and aged cheddar suit its weight.
