Giacomo Borgogno draws its 2021 Barolo from historic vineyards in the commune of Barolo, among them Liste, Fossati, Cannubi and San Pietro delle Viole. It is 100% Nebbiolo from south- and southeast-facing slopes of calcareous clay marl at 290 to 370 meters, harvested by hand in the second week of October. After destemming, the must ferments spontaneously in large concrete tanks for about 15 days, then spends another 20 days macerating under a submerged cap as malolactic takes place. More than 24 months in large Slavonian oak follow, with a final stretch in concrete before bottling. Ruby with garnet glints, it opens on fresh red fruit and spice; a clean line of acidity carries the palate, and the tannins are fine-textured and sweet-edged. Look to agnolotti del plin, porcini risotto or a wedge of Castelmagno alongside.

Critic Reviews

James Suckling
94 Points
94 Points, James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com: "This has a lovely bright nose of raspberries with lavender and a touch of mint. Subtle pepper as well. The palate is approachable with polished tannins, charming brightness and an attractive, linear and bright fruit profile. Drink now." 01/25

94 Points, Kerin O'Keefe, KerinOKeefe.com: "Rose, red berry, camphor and cake spice are just some of the aromas you’ll find on the fragrant and polished Barolo from Borgogno. Made with organically grown grapes, the smooth, juicy palate features ripe Morello cherry, cranberry, star anise and blood orange before finishing on a salted note. Taut, velvety tannins provide seamless support. Drink 2028–2036." 02/25

93 Points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator: "Enticing aromas and flavors of raspberry, cherry, rose, iron, licorice and wild herbs highlight this broad, heady red. This exudes fruit, defined by vibrant acidity and supported by refined, pliable tannins..." 07/25
