Critic Reviews

Jeb Dunnuck
96 Points
96 Points, Audrey Frick, JebDunnuck, com: "A youthful red brick color, the 2019 Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice has a phenomenal nose, delivering notes of polished leather, dried strawberries, cedar, mint, and lilacs. Taking on a more noble structure, this medium to full-bodied Barolo offers broader-shouldered tannins, a chiseled feel with ripe, rich tannins, and an earth-driven finish. It’s a fantastic wine to cellar and enjoy over the next two decades..." 5/13/24

97 Points, Kerin O'Keefe, KerinOKeefe.com: "You could spend all day just taking in the multifaceted aromas on the stunning Bricco Pernice from Elvio Cogno that include forest floor, crushed mint, new leather, cake spice and blue flower. Smooth and full-bodied, the delicious palate delivers ripe Morello cherry, raspberry compote, cinnamon, licorice and a dollop of vanilla accompanied by a backbone of velvety, fine-grained tannins. A stunning wine that while already so tempting, will be even better in a few years. Drink 2027–2039. Abv: 14.5%" 04/24
Wine Advocate
95+ Points
95+ Points, Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Elvio Cogno 2019 Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice starts off with earthy notes, with the fruity ones pouring in a little later. You get potting soil, bow resin, a hint of petroleum, blue bells and mountain flowers. Fruit-wise, there is plenty of plum and blackcurrant. There is an almost green tone of rhubarb or cruciferous vegetable. The Bricco Pernice cleans up in the mouth, with super grippy tannins that need more bottle age. Only 5,000 bottles were made." 04/24
Wine Enthusiast
96 Points
96 Points, Jeff Porter, Wine Enthusiast: "Crushed raspberries and sour cherries lift from the glass, with hints of rosebud, thyme and leather. The elegant palate showcases proper tannin management with supple tannin, and vibrant acidity creating an elegant profile. The palate continues with notes of red nectarine, macerated raspberries and crushed stones that are all additive as the wine will continue to develop with time in the cellar..." 12/23
Wine Spectator
96 Points
96 Points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator: "Cherry, plum, tar, tobacco and wild herb flavors permeate this muscular red, which is on the austere side today, not yielding much fruit, with a dense base of beefy tannins. The superlong, iron-infused finish shows this wine's future potential, so keep your hands off for now. Best from 2030 through 2050..." 11/24
