Von Neipperg gave Canon La Gaffelière more Cabernet than usual in 2023: 45% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 35% Merlot. Harvest ran from September 20 to 29 at 35 hL/ha, and the wine was raised in 40% new oak. The extra Cabernet gives this Saint-Émilion a more upright, structured frame than it normally shows, closer to the Médoc in feel. Iris and violet dominate the nose, woven into dark fruit, and the medium-bodied palate is lively and finely etched, with red and blue fruit, chalky tannins, and a long finish of mint, aniseed and licorice. It is tightly wound today, and tasters expect it to open around 2029 or 2030. Roast pigeon, braised beef cheek and a porcini tart are all good matches.

Matured in 40% new oak, this sports an unashamedly floral bouquet with pressed iris and violet flowers that are integrated with the black fruit—incredibly precise. The palate is very well balanced with slightly chalky tannins (a leitmotif of von Neipperg's 2023s). It fans out gently on the finish, yet it maintains a sense of verticality that you don't usually see in this Saint-Émilion. This is excellent, but a bit more Left Bank in style this year." 04/24
