A 5% share of Carmenère gives de Fonbel's 2022 a darker, more savory register than its 85% Merlot base would suggest, with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon filling out the frame. Harvested between 15 and 28 September, it was raised with only 30% in barrel and the rest in stainless steel. Blackcurrant and ripe black cherry meet cinnamon, orange peel, a whiff of tobacco and a hint of chalky earth on the nose. The palate is supple and lively, with chewy tannins, a touch of menthol and blue fruit carrying through a bright, focused finish. Critics expect it to be ready from around 2027. Try it alongside a mushroom and gruyère burger, pork chops with fennel, or a sausage pizza.
