For the second vintage running, Petit Verdot has a place in Les Griffons de Pichon Baron, making up 11% of the 2021 alongside 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 44% Merlot. The fruit comes from gravel parcels close to the estuary, sites that favor Cabernet, and Cabernet sets the aromatic tone: violet, pencil shavings and dark berries, with a green edge of bell pepper, eucalyptus and fresh herbs. 2021 lacked the breadth of the great years, and this Pauillac shows it in a medium-bodied, compact frame that stays taut and fresh rather than expansive. Blue and black fruit fill the middle, touched with clove and a flicker of raspberry, while ripe tannins give real grip through a firm, focused finish. Critics expect it to drink well from the mid-2020s into the 2030s. Serve it with rosemary-roasted lamb, grilled lamb chops or a lentil and mushroom ragout.

Antonio Galloni
93 Points
93 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous: "The 2021 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is another fine wine in this range from Pichon Baron. Soft and caressing, the 2021 offers up an exotic mélange of dark cherry, cinnamon, mocha, blood orange and leather. All the elements are impeccably balanced. (Drink between 2026-2036)" 02/24

92 Points, James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com: "This firm and racy cabernet-based red shows violet and rose-petal aromas and attractive currants. Medium-bodied, it’s juicy at the end. Needs three or four years to open. Best after 2027." 04/24

91 Points, Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com: "Slightly more Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated, the 2021 Les Griffons De Pichon Baron is based on 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot. It has a terrific blue fruit character as well as textbook Pauillac notes of scorched earth, graphite, and a touch of violets. With medium-bodied richness, an elegant mouthfeel, and quality tannins, it's an impeccably made 2021 that's worth seeking out and cellaring for upwards of a decade. (Drink between 2024-2034)" 04/24
