Petit Village picked its 2021 between September 29 and October 5, working through the parcels in several passes, and this was the first vintage to go through a density sorter, with the whole wine made by gravity. The blend is 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, matured in 50% new oak. Deep in color, it opens on black cherry, blueberry and cassis with a note of juniper, while the Cabernet adds cedar and a pencil-shaving edge. The palate has firm tannins with plenty of grip and fresh acidity, showing tart red cherry and a wet-stone quality alongside the darker fruit before a clean, lifted finish. It is approachable now yet has the structure to age, and critics place it from the mid-2020s into the early 2040s. Try it with roast guinea fowl, coq au vin or herb-roasted chicken.

95 Points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter: "Delicate but inviting aromatics of raspberry, red cherries and pink roses. Plump and nicely fleshy, this has a really enjoyable texture, is forward and in your face right now but has just the right weight and balance, with a gorgeous salty tang to the tannins and cool blue fruit. Tannins are perfect and this has the potential to age, too. Delicious. (Drink between 2026-2046)" 11/23

95 Points, James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com: "Vibrant and energetic wine with juicy blue plums and black cherries followed by violets, Christmas spices, cocoa and a touch of fresh herbs. Some hazelnut. Full- to medium-bodied, bright acidity with finely grained tannins that are polished and textured. Wonderful concentration with a lively vibrancy and density to it. 65% merlot, 26% cabernet franc and 9% cabernet sauvignon. Try after 2025." 12/23

93 Points, Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com: "One of the darker hued efforts in the vintage, the 2021 Château Petit-Village comes from 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and was raised in 50% new oak. While it doesn't match previous vintages, it's an undeniable success in the vintage, offering beautiful darker cherry and cassis-driven fruit as well as spicy wood, smoke tobacco, and damp earth-like aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied and balanced, with good concentration and ripe tannins, as well as beautifully integrated oak, it's well worth drinking and following over the coming decade or more. Bravo! (Drink between 2024-2034)" 04/24
