1996 was widely recognized as an exceptional vintage. The concentration of this wine takes on a delightfully rich aspect, it combines a surprising classic, balanced, solid tannic structure that has perfect, plump tannins thanks to a superb maturity, with very pure fruit, this is a wine that will keep for a very long time. Château Latour’s Grand Vin is made exclusively from “vieilles vignes” (old vines), an average of 60 years-old, from their finest plots that express the character of the terroir and forge the wine’s identity every year. This legendary estate is one of the oldest continuous Bordeaux wine-producing properties in the Pauillac appellation, dating back to the 14th century. Always a special and memorable experience

Wine Advocate
100 Points
100 Points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate; "Deep garnet-black in color, the 1996 is classic Latour at its utmost. The nose offers a tantalizing array of complex notes including dried Chinese plums, toasted nuts, Indian spices and black olive tapenade over a core of dried cherries and aged meat. The palate is pure power that is stunningly balanced giving a generous level of fruit concentration perfectly offset by a high level of very finely grained tannins and seamless freshness. Possessing a finish that just goes on and on, this is as good as it gets."

99 Points, Robert M. Parker, Jr., The Wine Advocate: "A spectacular Latour, the 1996 may be the modern day clone of the 1966, only riper. This vintage, which is so variable in Pomerol, St.-Emilion, and Graves, was fabulous for the late-harvested Cabernet Sauvignon of the northern Medoc because of splendid weather in late September and early October. An opaque purple color is followed by phenomenally sweet, pure aromas of cassis infused with subtle minerals. This massive offering possesses unreal levels of extract, full body, intensely ripe, but abundant tannin, and a finish that lasts for nearly a minute. Classic and dense, it displays the potential for 50-75 years of longevity. Although still an infant, it would be educational to taste a bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050."

98 Points, Jane Anson, Decanter: "Plenty of chewy tannins still in play, ripples of cassis, bilberry and blackberry fruits, set against olive paste, charcoal and eucalyptus. Things have softened around the edges no question, this is still full of life with decades ahead of it, but this is a great moment to start enjoying its promise. Textbook Latour in many ways, for its austerity and power, and its serious character that is underlaid by concentrated pleasure showcasing 'the gift of sub-gravel clays'. 56% of overall production in the first wine. 1% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Last released in 2014 as an ex-château wine. (Drink between 2023-2040)" 01/21
