The 2013 Fat was Marcus Notaro's first harvest as winemaker at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, and the season was kind to him. A dry winter led into a warm early summer and a mild July and August, with just a four-day heat spike in early September before calm weather returned. Picking ran from September 11 to October 9, block by block. Nathan Fay planted this vineyard in 1961, the first Cabernet Sauvignon in what became the Stags Leap District. The wine is 100% Cabernet, nearly three-quarters from the lower and middle blocks and the rest from the eastern upper section, and it aged 21 months in 96% new French oak. Blackberry, violet and baking spice lead, with bright red cherry surfacing on a supple, silky palate of fine tannins. Reviewers place its window from 2019 into the early 2040s. Pair it with grilled ribeye, venison loin or duck breast with cherries.
