A cold winter, a late but orderly budbreak in early April and a hot summer that never reached heatwave levels, with cool nights throughout, shaped Château Pavie's 2010. Picking ran from 20/09 to 30/09 at 28 hl/ha, and the blend is 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Two-thirds of the Perse family's 37 hectares sit on Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau, clay-limestone over fossil-rich rock. Malolactic runs in barrel, then the wine spends 24 months in 80% new oak. Dark berries, white truffle, wet stone and smoky tobacco fill the nose; the palate is dense and intense but holds its shape, with ripe tannins and a finish of great length. Critics see it just entering its prime, with the stuffing to run into the 2050s. Open it for côte de boeuf, venison with juniper or braised short ribs.

Critic Reviews

Jeb Dunnuck
100 Points
100 Points, Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com: "Pure perfection, the 2010 Château Pavie has that rare mix of richness and elegance that's so hard to find yet seems to emerge from this address with ease. Incredible darker berry fruits, white truffle, crushed stone, sappy flowers, and smoky, tobacco-like nuances all define the aromatics, and it's full-bodied, with a focused, yet rich, intense mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a blockbuster of a finish. It’s another 2010 that’s just now at the early stages of its prime drinking window and should cruise in cold cellars over the coming three decades. Drink 2025-2055. (Drink between 2025-2055)" 06/25
James Suckling
99 Points
99 Points, James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com: "This is really exceptional with such freshness, firmness and focus. Full body, incredibly tight tannins and a lengthy finish. Such power and elegance at the same time. The beginning of a new era of Pavie." 03/18
Wine Advocate
100 Points
100 Points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Pavie delivers tantalizing suggestions of candied violets, star anise and tapenade over a core of prunes, blueberry compote, Morello cherries and fruitcake with touches of underbrush and bouquet garni. Full-bodied, rich and exotically opulent, the palate has a rock-solid texture of velvety tannins and bold freshness supporting the generous palate of black and blue berry preserves, finishing long and fragrant." 03/20
Decanter
98 Points
98 Points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter: "Bright rose petals and dark fruit with hints of liquorice and tobacco. Smooth, sumptuous and heady, this feels both romantic and powerful. Massy tannins are softened by layers of strawberry and cherry, with salty, wet-stone edges and chalky grip. Cinnamon and clove add spice and lift. Excellent freshness, razor-sharp definition, ripe and structured. (Drink between 2025-2050)" 10/25
