Il Poggione makes a Brunello that leans warm and generous, and the 2021 is true to form. It is 100% Sangiovese from the estate's oldest vineyards, which sit between 150 and 450 meters and are trained to spur cordon and doppio capovolto. Hand-harvested fruit ferments 15 to 20 days in steel on indigenous yeasts, with a submerged cap at 25–28°C, and finishes malolactic there before long aging in 30- to 50-hectoliter French oak casks, then bottle. Ruby in the glass, it offers stewed strawberry, dried black cherry and plum with leather, star anise, sage and a flash of blood orange. The palate is broad and velvety, with enough acidity to keep the weight in check. Critics would start drinking it anywhere from 2027 to 2030, and one sees it lasting to 2046. Its natural company is Tuscan peposo, beef cheeks braised in red wine or roast pheasant.

Critic Reviews
Wine Spectator
96 Points
96 Points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator: "This is rich and even creamy, exhibiting blackberry, black currant and plum flavors. Backed by stiff, dusty tannins and moderate acidity. An equilibrium settles in on the finish, where fruity and savory elements mingle. Fine length. Best from 2030 through 2048." 03/26
Vinous Media
95+ Points
95+ Points, Eric Guido, Vinous: "The dark depths of rubbed sage, brown spice, chestnut and spiced blood orange give way to nuances of dried black cherry as the youthfully brooding 2021 Brunello di Montalcino slowly evolves in the glass. It is lifted in feel, soft textured and round, with pretty red berry fruits and cooling acidity as a vivid, gravelly mineral saturation penetrates the senses. This leaves an invigorating citrus twang to offset its fine-grained tannins as hints of spice linger through the long and surprisingly fresh finish. Bury this unbridled beast in the cellar." 11/25

95 Points
95 Points, Kerin O'Keefe, KerinOKeefe.com: "Violet, dog rose, new leather and dark spice aromas form the classic varietal nose on the Il Poggione 2021 Brunello. Full-bodied and enveloping, the palate features ripe Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and blood orange accompanied by taut, close-grained tannins that grip the finish while fresh acidity lends energy. Give the tannins time to fully unfurl. Drink 2031–2041. Abv: 14.5%" 11/25
