At 94% Tempranillo, rounded out with 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot, the 2022 Pruno from Villacreces is Ribera del Duero in a sturdy, youthful mood. It spent 12 months in barrel, yet the wood is barely noticeable and the fruit leads. Blackberry and red plum mix with balsamic herbs, damp earth and a sunny ripeness on the nose. The palate is firm rather than plush, driven by chewy tannins and generous alcohol, with a rustic streak that favors grip over polish. That grip is an asset at the table, where it wants fat and char to push against. Critics see it drinking now and through 2035. Set it beside grilled lamb chops, plancha-seared chorizo or well-aged Manchego.

93 Points, Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2022 Finca Villacreces was selected from 14 plots, a total of 64 hectares, that were planted between 1975 and 1994 at 725 meters above sea level. It's composed of 92% Tempranillo and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon (no Merlot in this very warm year), and they used 225- and 500-liter barrels with 20% new oak this year. It has notes of ripe berries and aromatic herbs with a spicy twist. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, with abundant, fine tannins and integrated oak. It comes in at 14.2% alcohol, a pH of 3.65 and 5.78 grams of acidity. 621,017 bottles, 8,000 magnums and 1,000 double magnums produced. It was bottled in September 2024." 06/25
