Picked on September 14, 2023, and bottled unfined and unfiltered on June 11, 2024, this is Kelley Fox’s Pinot Noir from the newly leased Stater Vineyard in the Dundee Hills. Sylvia and the late Wayne Stater established the site in 1988; it lies between the Eyrie and Durant vineyards, screened by cedar and fir, and these vines went into volcanic soil in 1990. A warm, even 2023 season gave the fruit depth while keeping it fresh. Fox used 10% whole clusters and native yeasts, then nine months in neutral 228-liter barrels, for 196 cases. She watched it fill out in the cellar into something deeper than it first promised. Deep ruby, it shows blackberry, cherry cordial, sage, lavender and cedar shavings, with brisk acidity, a peppery lift and gripping tannins closing on licorice and wet stone. Pork tenderloin, seared tuna and grilled quail fit it well.

96 Points, Eric Guido, Vinous: "The 2023 Pinot Noir Stater Vineyard blossoms with a captivating bouquet of crushed blackberries, rosemary, sage and freshly shaved cedar. Zesty on the palate, it shows a core of stimulating acidity that resonates as saline mineral tones mingle with depths of tart red berry fruit, drenching the senses with primary concentration. Grippy tannins saturate, while licorice merges with sour citrus and a sensation of liquid stone lingers. So much pent-up energy in the Stater. Bury it in the cellar. (Drink between 2028-2038)" 07/25

96 Points, Audrey Frick, JebDunnuck.com: "Deeper ruby in color, the 2023 Pinot Noir Stater Vineyard offers notes of cherry cordial, spice, lavender, and dark stones. The palate exhibits a peppery lift and a broader-shouldered structure, complemented by ripe tannins and vibrant acidity. Kelley notes that this biodynamically farmed site evolved into something deeper in the cellar, where initially it looked like it would take on the gossamer-like qualities of Maresh. Either way, it’s a gorgeous wine that offers an excellent contrast to the range. Drink 2025-2045. (Drink between 2025-2045)" 08/25
