Fully destemmed and given 17 months in French barrels, 65% of them new, the 2022 Victor Francis is Paul Lato's Pinot Noir from Peake Ranch Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills. Flowers come first in the glass, followed by red cherry, blood orange, dried herbs and a dusting of spice. On the palate it stays supple and light on its feet, with raspberry and redcurrant fruit set against earthy, woodland savor, and bright acidity drawing the finish out. With air, it fills out and takes on more weight. The appeal here is freshness and poise rather than extended cellaring, and critics suggest enjoying it through about 2032. Pour it with seared duck breast, cedar-plank salmon or a wild mushroom risotto.

94 Points, Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com: "The 2022 Pinot Noir Victor Francis Peake Ranch Vineyard comes from a great site in the Sta. Rita Hills and was all destemmed and raised in 65% new French oak for 17 months. Its medium ruby hue is followed by a pretty, medium-bodied, elegant Pinot Noir offering ample darker raspberry and redcurrant fruit as well as some spicy, underbrush, foresty, and savory nuances. Playing in the medium-bodied portion of the spectrum, it's charming, has ripe, polished tannins, a good spine of acidity, and outstanding length. I love its overall balance, and while it's certainly mid-weight, it has acidity and structure, and it gains richness with air. Give it a year or two and enjoy through 2032." 08/24
