A steady summer and a long, warm autumn in 2021 let slow-ripening Nebbiolo reach full maturity across Piedmont, and Produttori del Barbaresco’s Ovello Riserva carries that depth without losing its edge. The historic cooperative makes it from 100% Nebbiolo grown in Ovello, a single cru within the Barbaresco village boundaries. This is a taut, inward Riserva rather than a showy one. The aromatics build slowly: sour cherry and raspberry, orange peel, mint and white pepper, then darker hints of licorice, camphor and dried rose. The palate is concentrated and fleshy, with blood orange and redcurrant brightness, a stony edge, and dense, youthful tannins that keep everything tightly wound. Critics put the start of its window in the late 2020s and see it holding into the early 2040s. Set it beside braised veal cheeks, tajarin with white truffle or aged Castelmagno.
