The 2021 is only Prunotto’s third vintage from Mosconi, a site that gives wines of real weight and muscle. The vines sit between 360 and 400 meters above sea level with a south to southwest exposure, and just 6,000 bottles were produced. It starts out brooding, with incense, pipe tobacco and dry earth, before orange zest, rose and dried herbs brighten the nose. The palate is deep and saturated, with dark cherry and ripe plum carried on a steady build of fine-grained tannin that gives the wine a firm frame. A hazelnut note lingers on the long close. Critics see it starting to open around 2027 to 2028 and drinking well into the late 2030s. Braised short ribs, tajarin with shaved truffle, or roast pheasant will stand up to its power.

Jeb Dunnuck
92 Points
92 Points, Audrey Frick, JebDunnuck.com: "The 2021 Barolo Mosconi leads with a more mineral-inflected nose of crushed stones, ripe red berries, menthol, and licorice. Medium-bodied, it has a broader-shouldered feel while remaining elegant and compact, with supple, ripe tannins, lovely, ripe fresh fruit, and even acidity. Drink 2025-2035." 05/25

96 Points, Antonio Galloni, Antonio Galloni: "The 2021 Barolo Mosconi is one of the best and most complex wines I have tasted from Prunotto in some time. All the weight and muscle of Mosconi comes through in a potent, explosive Barolo endowed with fabulous depth. Macerated cherry, rose petal, incense, blood orange and dried herbs fill out the layers. There's so much to like here." 09/25

93 Points, Michaela Morris, Decanter: "From vineyards between 360 to 400 metres above sea level with a south to southwest exposure, Prunotto’s third vintage of Mosconi is brooding to begin with. Whiffs of incense, tobacco and dusty earth gain definition as brighter orange aromas emerge. The palate is well saturated with plum and cherry depths and takes shape as ample fine-grained tannins build to a sturdy backbone. Quite a tactile, impactful mouthful, it trails off with evocative hazelnut. 6,000 bottles produced." 01/25
