Violet and cedar lead the 2021 Malescot St. Exupéry, with blackberry and a thread of tobacco coming forward once the wine has had a little air. The blend is 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, raised for 12–14 months in barrel, 60% of the oak new. Red and blue fruit sit against a leafy, herbal edge that keeps the aromatics from turning sweet. The palate is plump and moderate in weight, with slightly grainy tannins that give it some chew, and the finish closes on a saline, almost coastal note. A spell in the decanter helps it now, and critics see it drinking from the mid-2020s well into the 2040s. Serve it with roast leg of lamb, rosemary-crusted lamb chops or a slow-braised lamb shoulder.

Jancis Robinson
17/20 Points
17 Points, Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com: "Tasted blind. Pale, shaded crimson. Not much nose. But layered fruit on the palate. Just a tad aggressive and stalky but pretty good. Very fresh. (JR) (Drink between 2028-2040)" 01/25
Antonio Galloni
94 Points
94 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous: "The 2021 Malescot St. Exupéry is beautiful—a wine that isn't trying to be too much in this challenging vintage. Floral aromatics and silky tannins give this mid-weight edition of Malescot quite a bit of charm. All the elements are so nicely balanced. Crushed flowers, dark red/purplish fruit, mint, spice and a dash of orange peel linger. This is nicely done. (Drink between 2028-2046)" 02/24
James Suckling
94 Points
94 Points, James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com: "Very floral with black currant and black cherry aromas with hints of lavender. Floral. Medium-bodied with firm and silky tannins that show beautiful length and polish. Goes on for a long time for the vintage. Classy. Drink after 2026." 12/23
