Vines 55 to 75 years old in the Currà vineyard give Sottimano’s 2021 Barbaresco its depth. Rino Sottimano founded the estate in Neive in 1975, and his son Andrea manages it today under certified organic farming. Spring frosts in 2021 cut yields naturally, and wide swings between warm days and cool nights carried the Nebbiolo through to a late harvest. Fermentation started spontaneously on native yeasts, the skins stayed in contact through an extended maceration, and the wine went to bottle with no fining or filtration. The result is dense and firmly built: fresh, low-pH acidity runs the length of the palate, and close-grained tannins give it the frame for long cellaring. It belongs beside tajarin with white truffle, roast veal, or a wedge of Castelmagno.

Kerin O`Keefe
95 Points
95 Points, Kerin O'Keefe, KerinOKeefe.com: "Eucalyptus, violet and dark spice aromas mingle with a whiff of underbrush on the classy Sottimano 2021 Barbaresco Currà. Full-bodied and boasting finesse, the palate features red cherry, pomegranate, star anise, mint and an earthy hint of truffle that lends personality. It's still young and a bit austere but already balanced, with taut, fine-grained tannins and tangy acidity. Drink 2029–2041." 05/26

97+ Points, Antonio Galloni, Antonio Galloni: "The 2021 Barbaresco Currà just as captivating as it has always been. Readers will find a vertical, explosive young Barbaresco that excels from start to finish. Complex floral aromatics lead into sweet red cherry fruit, mint, white pepper, dried herbs, blood orange and cinnamon. The 2021 has closed down a bit since I tasted it last year, but only by a touch. It's an absolutely compelling wine." 10/25

98 Points, Aldo Fiordelli, JamesSuckling.com: "A graceful red with a spicy nose, showing graphite, licorice, earth, juniper and wild dark fruit. Lots of complexity, offering oak-bark intensity, balsamic notes, rhubarb and pine resin. Full-bodied, this shines with crisp acidity, density and velvety tannins on the savory palate. An amazing wine of stunning depth and detail. Drink or hold." 02/26
