Princess Coralia Pignatelli della Leonessa took charge of Castell’in Villa when she was widowed in 1985, and the decisions at the estate remain hers. Her 2020 Chianti Classico is Sangiovese with a softer, more approachable shape than this house usually shows so young, needing little cellaring while keeping the firm structure its wines are known for. Dark wild cherry and sun-dried cherry lead, followed by cedar, pipe tobacco, dusty earth, scrub herbs and a savory, meaty edge. Plum, graphite, leather and incense build on a palate with real substance and bright, mouth-watering acidity, closing long on a stony note. Critics see it drinking well from 2026 into the mid-2030s, with one giving it until 2040. Set it beside grilled fennel sausages, ribollita or a wedge of aged pecorino.

Soft contours are the first sign of a rare young Chianti Classico from this estate that will drink well with minimal cellaring. Dark wild cherry, cedar and pipe tobacco open first. The 2020 offers gorgeous dark Sangiovese fruit along with all of the structure that is so typical of the wines here. Plum, graphite, leather, incense and dried herbs shape the striking finish.
