The vineyards behind this Gran Selezione surround the centuries-old Benedictine abbey of Badia a Passignano, in the San Donato in Poggio district of Chianti Classico. It is Antinori's mainstay Gran Selezione, made at about 120,000 bottles, and lately the house has dialed back the oak's influence on both flavor and tannin. The 2022 season pushed toward intensity, and the wine wears that concentration in a generous, full frame. Dark cherry and ripe plum lead, followed by cocoa, anise, leather and a sweet floral lift, with a hint of stone underneath. The tannins are soft and yielding, and the wood frames the fruit rather than masking it. Critics find it drinking well already, with estimates reaching into the 2030s. Bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled sausages or a wedge of aged Parmigiano-Reggiano all suit it.

Critic Reviews

James Suckling
93 Points
93 Points, James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com: "Floral and savory with macerated violets, lush black cherries and balsamic depth. Bone-dry on the palate with crisp acidity, medium body and chalky yet ripe tannins. Long, persistent finish. Drink or hold." 03/25

94 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous: "The 2022 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badia a Passignano is dark, pliant and super-expressive. Black cherry, plum, leather, spice and mocha fill out the wine's broad shoulders nicely. As always, the Badia is defined by its volume, but these days, there is much less oak impact in terms of flavor and tannin profile. Two thousand twenty-two was not the easiest vintage to rein back intensity, but this is a terrific effort just the same. The 2023 was aged mostly in 3HL casks, with some barrique." 07/25

93 Points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator: "A linear, dense red, whose strawberry and cherry flavors are delineated by vivid acidity and embraced by vanilla and oak spice notes. Builds to the lingering aftertaste, where the red fruit and oak accents linger beside dusty tannins. Shows fine potential; this just needs time. Best from 2027 through 2042. 10,761 cases made, 1,000 cases imported." 10/25
