Dr. Antonio Moretti Cuseri created Oreno in 1999 after his travels left him taken with the Bordeaux varieties, which he grafted onto established vines at Tenuta Sette Ponti in the Valdarno. The wine takes its name from a stream that crosses the estate through the clay-rich ground where its Merlot grows. The 2023 blends Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and it spent 18 months in small barrels plus a year in bottle before release. A rainy spring brought disease pressure and made ripening difficult, cutting the crop; hand selection within the bunches kept quality high. Ruby with violet glints, it offers black cherry, blackberry, licorice and mocha, threaded with cedar, tobacco and dried herbs. Powerful yet fresh, it carries velvety tannins into a long, savory finish. Critics place its window from the mid-2020s into the mid-2030s. Pair it with wild boar pappardelle, bistecca or aged pecorino.

Decanter
95 Points
95 Points, James Button, Decanter: "Situated in Tuscany's Valdarno on via Setteponti, an ancient route connecting Florence and Arezzo, this 2023 Oreno from Tenuta Sette Ponti is beautifully refined. Its earthy, spicy hedgerow berry aromas recall an autumn walk in the countryside, while in the mouth it showcases beautiful freshness, with balsamic herb-infused blackberries underlined by potpourri fragrance. Fine, slippery tannins lead into a long, poised finish with a flourish of spice. Lots more to come from this." 07/25

94+ Points
94+ Points, Antonio Galloni, Antonio Galloni: "Just bottled, the 2023 Oreno is another super-attractive wine in this range. The 20% Cabernet Franc, new to Oreno starting in 2022, really comes though in the wine's deeply pitched, spiced profile. Cedar, pipe tobacco, dried herbs, mocha and rose petal meld into a core of dark red-toned fruit. This is a hugely promising wine." 02/25

95 Points
95 Points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator Insider Selection: "This is concentrated with cherry, blackberry, plum, iron, sweet spice and tar flavors. Muscular tannins leave a firm grip on the finish, yet overall, this red feels balanced and crunchy. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2027 through 2040..." 10/15/25

98 Points
98 Points, #16 Wine Top 100 Wines Of Italy 2025, James Suckling: "Dark and complex wine, earthy and concentrated yet balanced. Vibrant aromas of cassis, violets, licorice, pencil shavings and graphite. Full-bodied, it displays a dynamic palate with dense, velvety tannins, fruit concentration and crisp, integrated acidity, which keeps it in balance. 45% merlot, 30% cabernet sauvignon, 20% cabernet franc, and 5% petit verdot. Gorgeous now, but even better in two or three years and beyond..." 09/25
