Drought through late spring and early summer, then heavy rain in mid-August, gave I Greppi a 2022 harvest that ripened without losing freshness. Greppicaia, the estate's Bolgheri Superiore, draws on its best parcels between the villages of Bolgheri and Castagneto Carducci, blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc with 8% Petit Verdot. Grapes are picked by hand and sorted cluster by cluster, fermented in stainless steel, then aged 18 months in French barriques after malolactic. The McMahon family, owners since 2017, make 10,000 bottles. The wine is inky purple, with blackcurrant, plum and cocoa on the nose, lifted by menthol and a hint of rose. Oak shows as cedar and sweet spice, but lively acidity and fine, firm tannins carry it to a long, saline finish. Critics see it opening around 2026–2028 and going well into the 2040s. Pour it with braised short ribs, rosemary lamb or aged pecorino.

96 Points, Audrey Frick, JebDunnuck.com: "A highly luxurious style, the 2022 Greppicaia pours a dark purple/red color and is very pronounced and saturated with layered oak spice, toasted vanilla, cedar, boysenberry, plum, cigar box, and polished leather. While the oak is quite forward, this is a wine of high quality, with a bright spine of ripe acidity to balance it out and a full-bodied, broad-shouldered and well-defined, ripe texture that doesn’t feel weighted. It has a very long, salty finish with bright redcurrant fruit lasting long on the palate. I can't help but be impressed here, although it’s going to need several years in a cellar and is built for the long haul..." 03/19/25

94 Points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator Insider: "A solid underpinning allows the black cherry, blackberry, cedar and spice flavors to unravel as this red builds on the palate to the long aftertaste. Balanced and complex, with a mineral element emerging on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc..." 07/25

95 Points, James Button, Decanter: "Greppicaia is a deep and dark yet precise wine in 2022, with black fruit and balsamic herb scents leading into an intense, silky mouthful of quasi-austere yet inherently juicy black berries framed by balsamic and menthol twists. Sapidity and salinity provide relief and refreshment, and the fine-grained tannins are well integrated yet structural. Touches of orange peel and pomegranate emerge on the long, fresh, succulent finish. Class. 8% Petit Verdot..." 07/25

95 Points, James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com: "Deep and intense, with dark fruit, coffee beans, chocolate, grilled herbs and burnt oranges on the nose. Structured and focused, with a medium to full body and fine tannins that frame the wine. Bright, agile and tightly built. There’s power that comes with harmony and focus. Drink or hold..." 07/25
