Half new oak, 35% concrete amphora and the rest once-used barrels: the élevage at Pontet-Canet in 2021 is as distinctive as the wine. The blend is 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, with a little more Petit Verdot than the estate usually uses, and the winemaking team is led by technical director Mathieu Bessonet. This is a floral, aromatic Pauillac, with violets and iris over cassis, black cherry and blue fruit, then cedar, graphite and a touch of pencil shavings. The palate is medium to full, juicy and bright, with fine, plentiful tannin, a hint of mocha and a fresh finish that stays lively rather than heavy. Critics expect it to open in the late 2020s and run to around 2050. Try it with a grilled ribeye, beef tenderloin in peppercorn sauce or aged Mimolette.

Jane Anson
95 Points
95 Points, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux: “Bright berry red in colour, nuanced blackberry and loganberry with bitter black chocolate notes from the first attack. Lovely precision, good level of spice, earthy, unfussy, rose stem and blackcurrant bud. This was the third vintage with mildew pessure, but the team are now experienced, and I can attest to seeing the vines during harvest and remarking on how healthy they looked, with no-till farming helping concentration. Plenty of tannins give structure and are shot through with sinew and juice, this is an impressive wine from technical director Mathieu Bessonet, with Pauillac typicity. Harvest 24 september until 12 October. 50% new oak, 35% amphora, 15% one year barrels, 15% press (aged in the amphora).” 4/21

95 Points, James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com: "This is a very pretty 2021 with a solid, beautiful mid-palate and density. Juicy fruit, slightly chewy tannins and a savory finish. Hints of graphite. Drink or hold." 04/24

17+ Points, Julia Harding, JancisRobinson.com: "58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot.Very dark with purplish rim. Open and fragrant, a touch floral along with fine savoury fruit. Powerful and very different from most of the 2021s in this line-up. Dry, elegantly tannic finish. (JH) (Drink between 2028-2043)" 10/23
