Christian Moueix made no Dominus in 2022, so the 2023 arrives as the estate's first release in two years—and an unusually open one for a wine that normally asks for patience. The blend is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, aged 20 months in French oak, 40% of it new. In 2023 Oakville gave a Dominus that is approachable well ahead of its usual schedule. Red cherry and red berries lead, backed by blackberry and cassis, with rose petal, lavender, graphite and a savory edge of black olive and sage. Medium to full in body, it moves seamlessly, its fine-grained tannins giving shape without grip. Critics see it drinking well from the mid-2020s and holding for two decades or more. Serve it with rack of lamb, dry-aged ribeye or duck breast with cherries.

Critic Reviews

James Suckling
99 Points
99 Points, James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com: "Black currant, pencil shaving, subtle sandalwood, wet earth, forest floor and violet aromas follow through to a medium- to full-bodied palate with ultra-fine tannins that integrate perfectly at the end. A polished and caressing texture that goes on for minutes. The balance and drinkability of this Dominus is terrific, and it will age beautifully. A blend of 87% cabernet sauvignon, 9% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot. From organically grown grapes. Very drinkable now, but will age beautifully." 02/26
Decanter
98 Points
98 Points, Jonathan Cristaldi, Decanter: "The 2023 Dominus Estate is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. In this vintage, the wine beautifully captures the spirit of 2023 in Oakville, offering pure red-berry and cherry fruit alongside blackberry, all threaded with an expressive ironstone-mineral core, with black olive pit and pressed-floral notes. Hints of sage and loamy earth add dimension. Ultra-fine, powdery tannins provide ample structure and an approachability rarely encountered at this early stage for this label. Owner Christian Moueix decided to release this wine at a slightly lower price than the exceptional 2021 (even though they didn't make wine in 2022). (Drink between 2026-2046)" 03/26
Wine Advocate
98 Points
98 Points, Joe Czerwinski. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The only one of the Dominus wines to show more than a hint of wood, the 2023 Dominus matured in 40% new French oak, leaving it marked by caramel and cedar overtones. Yet that oak aging is balanced by plenty of black cherry fruit and loamy earth notes, blending easily into a harmonious whole. Medium- to full-bodied, this rich, almost creamy blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot finishes with velvety tannins borne on a finish that unfolds to reveal incredible persistence and complexity." 05/26
Antonio Galloni
96 Points
96 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous: "The 2023 Dominus is a very pretty, surprisingly open-knit wine from this estate. Soft contours wrap around a core of pliant red/purplish fruit. Lavender, rose petal and gently spiced overtones caress the mid-palate and finish. I expect the 2023 will drink well with minimal cellaring, something that is rarely the case here. (Drink between 2027-2043)" 11/25
Jeb Dunnuck
97 Points
97 Points, Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com: "Based on 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot and aged 20 months in 40% new French oak, the 2023 Dominus is absolutely gorgeous, with an incredible level of purity and refinement. Cassis, graphite, crushed stone, melted crayons, and floral nuances all define the aromatics. It's medium to full-bodied, with seamless, refined elegance, ultra-fine tannins, beautiful mid-palate depth, and outstanding length. This more charming, forward, and seductive style of Dominus will offer incredible appeal over the next 20-25 years or more. Drink 2025-2050." 12/25
