Pian delle Vigne is named for the area around a nineteenth-century railway station 6 kilometers southwest of Montalcino, and has belonged to Antinori since its first vintage, 1995. Of its 184 hectares, 65 are vineyard, facing southwest at about 130 meters. The 2021 is Sangiovese, fermented in stainless steel with some 12 days on the skins, then aged two years in oak casks of 30 to 80 hectoliters. Late pruning held back budbreak ahead of the April 7 cold snap; a hot, dry summer gave way to cooling late-August rain and unhurried ripening, with picking in the second half of September. Blood orange, loquat and yellow blossom meet raspberry, menthol and tobacco, and the palate is supple and bright, with refined tannins and a persistent, spice-edged finish. Critics see it hitting its stride from the mid-to-late 2020s into the 2030s. It shines alongside roast guinea fowl, tagliata or porcini crostini.

Critic Reviews
Vinous Media
94 Points
94 Points, Eric Guido, Vinous: "The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino wafts up with a pretty blend of citrus-tinged blackberries, violets and sweet spice. Textures of pure silk and cooling acidity beautifully complement racy red and black fruits. I love the momentum and purity here. It leaves a steely mineral concentration to mingle with fine tannins and inner rose tones. Year after year, Pian delle Vigne continues to improve through its graceful lift." 11/25
Wine Spectator
95 Points
95 Points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator: "A focused beam of black cherry, cassis and violet flavors permeates this tensile red. Mineral and wild scrub notes add depth as this builds to the long, fruity and savory aftertaste. A salty element lingers. Best from 2029 through 2045.” 03/26

94 Points
94 Points, Aldo Fiordelli, JamesSuckling.com: "A lush and ripe wine with plums, black cherries, spices, chocolate and pressed violets on the nose. Firm, chalky tannins on the palate, with a medium to full body and crisp acidity. Tight, floral finish. Try from 2028." 12/25
