Spirit Hill is an Argyle estate vineyard on volcanic soils in the Eola-Amity Hills, and Nicolas-Jay bottles its fruit as a single-vineyard, all-Chardonnay wine. Jean-Nicolas Méo fermented the 2023 with native yeasts and raised it in French oak for a little over a year, around two-fifths of the barrels new. A wet winter, warm summer days and a few brief showers before harvest gave fruit with real concentration that still holds its freshness. Pale gold in the glass, it opens with struck flint and white pepper over lemon curd, apricot, honey and white flowers. The palate is full and textured, Meyer lemon and green apple held tight by bright acidity, finishing long and stony. Critics give it until 2037. Try it with seared scallops, lobster in brown butter, roast chicken or a wedge of aged Comté.

94 Points
94 Points, Eric Guido, Vinous: "The 2023 Chardonnay Spirit Hill wafts up with a beguiling bouquet of dusty sage, tarragon, stone dust and nectarine. Flinty green apple tones and crunchy minerals wash across the palate, all energized by juicy acidity. This wine is intensely fruity yet focused, tapering off with lemony concentration and supreme freshness." 07/25

96 Points, Audrey Frick, JebDunnuck.com: "A bright yellow/gold color, the 2023 Chardonnay Spirit Hills comes from volcanic soils in the Eola-Amity Hills and saw 40% new French oak for 13 months. Here the reduction bumps up a touch, with notes of white pepper and flinty lift that give way to green apples and salted lime. The palate has a more linear feel, with refreshing, ripe acidity, a floating, chalky texture, even length, and floating finish. Drink 2025-2037." 08/25

96 Points, Clive Pursehouse, Decanter: "An opulent Chardonnay from the Spirit Hill site, an Argyle estate vineyard. Aromatics that are almost creamy and viscous with depth of lemon curd, honeyed apricot and deep florals. The palate is rich and ripe with juicy Meyer lemon pulp, the Eola-Amity Hills spice and minerality frames this beautifully full, fruit-driven Chardonnay wonderfully." 08/25
