Piper Heidsieck Brut NV (750ML)

Pinot Noir makes up half of Piper-Heidsieck's Cuvée Brut, with 30% Meunier and 20% Chardonnay completing a multi-vintage blend drawn from more than 100 crus across Champagne. The grapes are picked by hand at full ripeness. That Pinot Noir lead sets the tone in the glass: ripe strawberry and pear come first, with white peach, lemon peel and a touch of orange blossom behind them. The palate brings toasted bread, fresh almond and a hint of mint, and a rich, biscuity middle is kept lively by bright acidity and a salty edge through the finish. Generous without turning heavy, it works as easily before dinner as during it. Critics see it at its best through 2028. Bring it out with prawn tagliatelle, fried chicken, smoked salmon blini or a bowl of salted Marcona almonds.
