A dry winter opened the 2020 season at Pian delle Vigne, and a sunny spring and early summer with timely showers topped up soil water reserves before a warm August that never tipped into extremes. Wide swings between day and night kept the Sangiovese fresh through a harvest that ran from just past mid-September to the month's last week. The Antinori family has owned this estate 6 kilometers southwest of Montalcino since its first vintage in 1995. After about 12 days on the skins, the wine spent two years in large oak casks of 30 to 80 hectoliters. Blood orange and plum lead, with dark cherry, cocoa, sage and a balsamic note behind; the palate is succulent and lively, its fine tannins trailing into a long, spiced finish. Critics place its best years through the mid-2030s. Try it with pappardelle al cinghiale, roast pork loin with fennel or aged pecorino.

92 Points
92 Points, Audrey Frick, JebDunnuck.com: "The 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino pours a saturated magenta/red color and is generous on the nose with notes of mixed berry compote, licorice candies, leather, and mocha. It fills the palate and has well-defined broad shoulders, with chalky tannins and a grounding mineral texture. A red consistent with what lovers of these wines can expect, it should have another 10 years ahead." 01/25

93 Points, Eric Guido, Vinous: " Dried black cherries and crushed plums mix with cocoa, sage and dried orange peels as the 2020 Brunello di Montalcino emerges from the glass. This displays incredible vibrancy within. It’s juicy and spry, with ripe red and black fruits elevated by brilliant acidity as nuances of sour citrus add further tension toward the close. The 2020 leaves the palate stained in primary concentration and a coating of fine tannins, tapering off spicy and long yet still lively as hints of tart raspberry keep the mouth watering for more. Recent vintages from Pian delle Vigne have delightful new energy and verve. (Drink between 2027-2036)" 11/24

92 Points, Kerin O'Keefe, KerinOKeefe.com: "Aromas of ripe dark-skinned berry, blue flower and oak-driven spice come to the forefront on the 2020 Brunello from the Antinori Pian delle Vigne Montalcino estate. The firm palate features mature black plum, dried cherry, mocha, blood orange and vanilla accompanied by close-grained, crushed velvet tannins that leave a grippy, drying finish. Drink 2028–2033. 95 Points, Wine Enthusiast: "The nose opens with salted dark chocolate, Luxardo cherries, pomegranate syrup and espresso, then aromas of new leather and crushed rocks emerge. The palate is full of bitter chocolate and sweet and tart berries, and has a gleaming knife’s edge of metallic tang. Refined tannins and lots of acid..." 10/25

94 Points James Suckling: “A complex red with floral, lemon-rind and candied-cherry character. It’s medium-bodied with juicy fruit, as well as plenty of dried citrus rind. Some sandalwood and dried-flower undertones, too. Drink in three or four years.” 10/24
