Zinfandel

Native to Croatia and northeast Italy where it's known as Primotivo, California's oldest vineyards are made up entirely of Zinfandel plantings, holdovers from the pre-Prohibition era when early immigrant settlers brought local grapes from their homelands. Rich, sometimes jammy and often spicy and character-driven, this is one of the rare wines that can hold its own alongside a exotic foods like a lamb kebob or chutney.
