Our History

Founded in 1944, Zachys Wine & Liquor is one of the oldest fine wine and spirits retailers in America, as well as one of the last that remains family owned. We take immense pride in being one of the most trusted and awarded retailers, noted for our breadth of fine and rare wines and spirits. We have spent decades building and leveraging these global wine connections to become one of the world’s greatest wine and spirits auction houses as well.

When Zachy Zacharia established the East Parkway Liquor House in Scarsdale, New York, almost eight decades ago, he could have never imagined the impact his storefront would have on American consumers. It was not until his son Don Zacharia purchased the business in 1961 that the groundwork for the company’s future was laid out. Those goals – to become the premier fine wine and spirits retailers in the U.S., and to do so with exemplary customer service – are still the cornerstones of the business today.

Through four generations of the Zacharia family, what started as a local retail shop in Scarsdale, New York, has expanded into a 130-employee market leader in fine wines and spirits, with headquarters in Port Chester, NY, and operations in Washington, D.C., Hong Kong and London, across traditional retail, e-commerce, auction and storage businesses.

Zachys Retail has continuously led the way in revolutionizing the fine wine and spirits consumer space in the United States, from becoming the first U.S. retailer to sell Bordeaux Futures in the 1970s, to launching the first retail website in the late 1990s, to serving clients across the United States with its e-commerce business. And while the rise of e-commerce, consignment sales and virtual tastings may have changed how the world acquires rare wine and spirits, it has not changed our passion for curating the finest releases each year and sharing them with our distinctive touch.
