On January 16th, 1920 our country enacted the Volstead Act, which led to a 13-year ban on the production and distribution of alcoholic beverages on US soil. Well, officially it did, but in that gap a host of substitutes rushed to fill the void. Moonshine from the South, bathtub gin from the northeast and wine bricks from California began to make their presence known, all increasing America’s desire for “the real thing.” Enter bootleggers, and our cover “model” for our autumn 2020 mailer, and today’s feature, Piper-Heidsieck’s Prohibition bottle in honor of Prohibition’s 100-year anniversary – NV Piper Heidsieck Brut Prohibition Edition. These are classic bubbles under $50, perfect for celebrating or just sipping alongside a chesseburger and fries. Trust us! These limited edition bottles will be hard to come by, so secure yours from Zachys today.
The latest release of Piper-Heidsieck's NV Cuvée Brut is showing well, offering up attractive aromas of fresh pears, green apple, dried flowers and subtle hints of wheat toast and fresh bread. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, generous but nicely focused, with an enveloping core of fruit, ripe but racy acids and a nicely balanced finish. This is a very solid non-vintage cuvée that should evolve gracefully for the coming decade.
Lithe and vibrant, this graceful Champagne is driven by well-knit, racy acidity, carrying flavors of ripe black cherry, grated ginger, toast point and mineral on the satiny mousse. Drink now through 2022. 222,500 cases made, 29,000 cases imported.
91 Points, Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com: "The NV Cuvée Brut is a bright, fresh effort from this estate. Offering up plenty of yeasty notes, stone fruits, a kiss of brioche and subtle minerality, it’s clean and lively on the palate, with bright acidity, and a classic dry finish. If you’re looking for a high-quality sparker that will deliver the goods over the coming 4-5 years, you can’t go wrong here."
