The Bastianich Family has Whipped up some Great Wines!
This is no flash in the pan. These Italian whites and reds are here to stay!
Friuli is still one of the undiscovered gems of Italy, producing some fascinating food-friendly white wines from the grapes Friulano (formerly called Tocai Friulano) and Ribolla Gialla. The Bastianich family of cooks and restaurateurs has its roots in this extreme Northeast region and founded the winery to do homage to their heritage and the terroir shared by Italy, Croatia, and Slovenia. Several vintages later, the Bastianich winery became a household name.
This is far from a celebrity vanity project. They've gotten their share of great press, and their sister winery, La Mozza (in partnership with Mario Batali), is starting to catch fire:
"My impression is that La Mozza sometimes gets a little bit lost within the vast Bastianich/Batali empire, which is a shame, as the wines are terrific. The Morellino is typically a great value, while the Aragone is one of the more distinctive wines in Maremma. A business model that is totally integrated with the rest of the group's other activities means these wines arrive to market extremely competitively priced." Antonio Galloni, August 2013.
Do yourself a favor and grab some of these wines while they're hot! Pairing beautifully with a wide range of dishes, you'll agree that these wines are well made...or maybe we should say "well done!"
