Domaine du Coulet Cornas - Bold Wines from a Humble Winemaker
The Northern Rhone is one of the undisputed premier wine regions of the world. Hermitage and Cote-Rotie tend to be the wines of choice for connoisseurs and collectors, but today it's Cornas that has us impressed. We just don't understand how their Syrahs continue to be undervalued on the world market, despite endless volumes of praise for their top producers.
Today we're spotlighting Domaine du Coulet, and for one simple reason: the wines are excellent.
"High [quality] wines are made of "simple" grapes. Any winemaking, even perfect, cannot create what we can get in a natural way. Only grapes hold this magic. Our winemaking is "flexible" to let wine do as it likes in order to express its soil and its vintage." - Winemaker Mattheu Barret
On top of being one of the most humble winemakers in the world, Matthieu Barret clearly has the magic touch. He's coaxed the very best out of his grapes, and the wines are finessed, pure and terroir-expressive. There is plenty for both Northern and Southern Rhone enthusiasts to enjoy, and for anyone curious about Northern Rhone wines, we can think of no better place to start than here!
