This Could Be the Champagne of the Vintage?!
97+pt Champagne - The Legendary Comtes de Champagne
We have been touting the 2002 Comtes de Champagne for some time now.
For us...it is absolutely fantastic!!!
It is the best Comtes de Champagne we have ever tasted upon release.
Earlier this year, Antonio Galloni blogged a little insight to how he was feeling about the wine:
2002 Comtes de Champagne – the most striking and complete of the four vintages I tasted (2000, 2002, 2004, 2005). The 2002 is a magnificent CdC layered with sumptuous fruit. It boasts stunning depth and an endless, haunting finish. A very short crop for Taittinger. I imagine the 2002 will disappear from the market as soon as people taste it. The 2002 CdC was one of the most remarkable wines I tasted during the week I spent in Champagne in March. If you like CdC, this is a must-have vintage." Antonio Galloni the Wine Advocate posted on eRobertParker.com Bulletin Board 4/25/2012.
And last night, John Gilman, of a View from the Cellar sent out an addendum to his annual Champagne issue released a few weeks ago, including his first taste of the 2002 Comtes de Champagne. The result, a massively impressive review from Mr. Gilman awarding the wine 97+ points!
“...I have been looking forward to the release of the 2002 Comtes de Champagne for several years now and the first taste of this classic in the making certainly did not disappoint. The deep and stunning nose soars from the glass in a pure and toasty mélange of delicious apples, pears, brioche, just a hint of wood char, a gloriously complex base of chalky soil tones, orange zest, incipient notes of pastry cream, a dollop of lemon blossoms and a gently smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and supremely elegant, with a great core of fruit, utterly refined mousse, crisp acids, superb balance and delineation and great length and grip on the seamless and absolutely dancing finish. Given the ripeness of the 2002 vintage, the stunning refinement and elegance of this Comtes de Champagne is absolutely magical! A great, great wine. 2012-240. 97+.” John Gilman a View from the Cellar 9/12.
This wine is stunning and it is very hard to disagree with Mr. Gilman, even calling it “magical” or “a great, great wine.” And if it merits a 97+ does that mean in time as it ages it will be a 100 point Champagne?! Just could be as Comtes de Champagne is notoriously good as it ages. Something all major Champagne critics including Mr. Galloni agree on.
Now is the time to reserve your Comtes de Champagne 2002 before Mr. Galloni’s Champagne reviews are released in November and he tops the Gilman 97+ score.
