92pt, Under-$15 Tuscan Red
The Badiola from Mazzei is a red blend (mostly Sangiovese with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon) from the winemakers that brought us Fonterutoli Siepi and Ser Lapo Chianti Classico. Between the track record of this winery and the various publications perennially scoring this wine in the upper 80s, one can expect an item of considerable quality, year-in and year-out.
But as any sports fan will tell you, sometimes something simply clicks for an athlete; their skills line up, they unlock their potential and put up incredible numbers, and we have what's casually known as a "Career Year".
Mazzei's Badiola tells us that it can happen with wine too!
From a winery that's already known for its quality, it's safe to say that Mazzei has hit a home run / scored a touchdown / scored a hat trick with this wine! If this is what they can churn out for their entry-level wine, then I will keep a close eye on Mazzei's future releases, especially from this vintage!
This is the very first allocation available in the United States, arriving to us in early October. I should also note that this combination of quality, price, and availability all but guarantees this wine a spot on Wine Spectator's Top 100 list. Prices are sure to skyrocket and inventory sure to dwindle once we blow the lid off this wine, so act fast!
