Zachys Is Competing For Its VERY OWN Toughman

September 9, 2012 | Croton Point Park

A year has passed since Zachys circled the wagons, followed my lead and raised $40,000 for Families Of Freedom Scholarship Fund (A charity to benefit the children of 9/11 victims). While completing a half Ironman is an accomplishment, it pales in comparison to the battle that one of our very own is undergoing here at the store...John Dawson, Zachys very own TOUGHMAN.

Over the last 7 years John has been a signature friendly face on the Zachys sales floor that exuberantly runs to the aid of shoppers here in the store. The reason I say exuberantly is that John has been an AVID collector/lover of fine wines from around the world for over 4 decades. After retiring from a career working for the U.S. Postal Service 7 years ago he took on a new career following one of his true passions in life...wine. In my 18 years here at the store, I have never seen anyone get as much of a thrill and satisfaction out of matching the right wine to the right client. His passion for wine, his love of this store, his commitment to his fellow workers and his drive to return back to work has inspired all of us here at Zachys to do all we can to aid John through his tough journey ahead.

John has been our inspiration while dealing with the treatments involved with stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer. We are updated regularly throughout the process, “I've had the 7 of the 30 treatments I need. I'll have completed them in Dec, or early Jan. I've experienced a 'Laundry List' of side effects that wear me out physically but I'm going to get through this and it will be all for the better….I greatly appreciate all the words of encouragement, phone calls, emails, cards Prayers and healing thoughts from my Zachys Family. They have a powerful effect on my motivation and keep me positive…I'll stay in touch and just wish I could get back to even one day a week. It's not work but pleasure for me to pick the right wine that will make our Clients happy…” John Dawson June 2012.

By my calculations John has spent more than 2,000 days working on the sales floor here at the store. With an average of 20 clients per day (Which is a gross underestimation), John has helped more than 40,000 clients in his time spent at Zachys. John’s employee folder is overflowing with praise and gratitude we have received from appreciative clients and this is EXACTLY why he does it!

John has given so much to the clients and staff at Zachys and now is our time to give back to John. The physical struggles and daily challenges during the treatment process is enough to deal with. The added financial burden is what his “Zachys Family” is here to support.

Both Rob Allen and I have pledged to be the Zachys TOUGHMEN on John Dawson’s behalf over the course of this Summer leading up to race day on Sunday, September 9th. Our 1.2 mile swim/56 mile bike/13.1 mile ride will be a small step in comparison to the large one that John needs to take. Throughout the training process John will be our inspiration to be the best we can be in an effort to support all he has (and will continue to) contributed as a co-worker, client representative and above all, as a friend.

John’s motivating thought throughout his treatment process has been to, "...return to work so I can get back to pairing the right people to the right wines...it’s what gets me through my treatments.”

Please support us in our effort to help John—Zachys very own Toughman.

All my best,
Andrew McMurray
