Philipponnat Clos des Goisses 2003 (750ML)

95 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous: "The 2003 Clos de Goisses is hands down one of the most pleasant surprises of this very challenging harvest. An open, floral bouquet leads to voluptuous, expressive fruit in a Champagne that stands out for its exceptional balance. Clos ds Goisses is always quite vinous in style, and that is very much the case in 2003 as well. A creamy, intense wine, the 2003 Goisses is drop-dead gorgeous. Licorice, smoke, honey, chamomile, and graphite are some of many notes that open up over time, lending an air of exoticism that is irresistible. Clos des Goisses has a stellar track record of aging. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see what time brings to the 2003. Production was just 6,000 bottles as opposed to the more typical 22,000-25,000. For that sacrifice, Charles Philipponnat was rewarded with an exceptional Clos des Goisses. This bottle was disgorged in August 2012." 05/13 "The flagship 2002 Brut Clos des Goisses is simply stunning in this vintage. Seamless, ripe and beguiling, the 2002 is pure harmony in the glass. Dried pears, apricots, flowers, red berries and spices are some of the many notes that inform this towering, aristocratic wine. At once vertical yet endowed with serious length, the 2002 stands out for its breathtaking balance and overall sense of harmony. Layers of fruit built to the huge, creamy finish. This is a great showing from Philipponnat...96." WA 11/12. “Rating: *** This highly-anticipated release does not disappoint, although its youthfulness is still nearly painful at the moment, its flavors wrapped up in a tightly-wound, chalk-driven structure. It demonstrates an outstanding sense of refinement and finesse, with a silky texture and a tense, elongated shape on the palate; above all, it finishes with a complex, multi-dimensional fragrance, anchored by a piercing note of saline minerality and persisting with exceptional length, nuance and poise. This will be stunning, but it will likely take another decade or even two to fully reveal its character and depth—if you open it now, be sure you have additional bottles in the cellar for the future. Last tasted: 12/11” Peter Liem the Champagne Guide.net "Tightly knit and firm, this is lightly chalky in texture but shows a sense of overall finesse, offering notes of ripe poached apple and pear, black currant, blanched almond, licorice and ground anise...93" WS 06/13
