Where it all started

The Zachys Wine Auction experience reaches back to the introduction of wine auctions into New York City in 1994. Don Zacharia, owner of Zachys, played a major role in convincing regulators in Albany to allow the selling of fine wine at auction in New York. Zachys then approached Christie’s and formed a strategic partnership which became the most successful wine auction business in the newly created marketplace. During their seven year association, Zachys-Christie’s set many still unbroken wine auction records. Zachys created much of the wine auction infrastructure which now supports Zachys Wine Auctions, Inc. After splitting from Christie’s, Don Zacharia reassembled the key players from the winning Zachys-Christie’s team under the Zachys banner.

Don Zacharia’s aim has always been to bring the theatre back into the auction room, and we continue to change the face of wine auctions every year. In October 2004, two years after our first independent auction, Zachys headed west to host the Inaugural Los Angeles Auction. We now conduct nine or ten auctions per year, and our 2005 and 2006 auction seasons both saw over $30 million sold. Not too shabby for a family business from Scarsdale, New York! In November 2006, Zachys was thrilled to host Provenance, the inaugural evening sale, which featured 290 lots of the finest and rarest wines in the world. The event featured a sumptuous five-course meal prepared by Daniel Boulud, and it was the highlight of Zachys’ fall season.

Our global team of consultants poises Zachys Wine Auctions to reach the ever-expanding worldwide auction market. David Wainwright, an advisor specializing in Europe and Asia, adds to our international client base, hosting pre-auction Zachys events in hot spots such as Hong Kong and Miami. Furthermore, as the nation’s largest and most powerful retailer of fine Bordeaux, we have established relationships in Bordeaux and throughout Europe that no other auction house can boast.

Despite our rapid rise to the top of the U.S. wine auction market, and our international status as a purveyor of fine and rare wines, Zachys is still a family business at heart. What truly sets everything attached to the Zachys name apart - be it the retail store, the auction division or our private storage service - is our commitment to exceptional customer service. This dedication to keep both consignors and buyers satisfied runs throughout the entire Zachys Wine Auctions experience.
